Our Mission

"In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad."

The American Legion Auxiliary of Post 569, Milan, Illinois, carries forward this mission through dedicated volunteer service, community outreach, and unwavering support for the veterans and families of our community. As part of a Post chartered on August 14, 1920, we draw strength from over a century of service.

"For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes—

To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; To maintain law and order; To foster and perpetuate a 100-percent Americanism; To preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the Great Wars; To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; To combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; To make right the master of might; To promote peace and goodwill on earth; To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; To participate in and contribute to the accomplishment of the aims and purposes of The American Legion; To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness; "

The Memorial Poppy

In Flanders Fields

"In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row…"

— Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, 1915

The red memorial poppy is the signature flower of the American Legion Auxiliary. Inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, the Poppy Program honors the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Each poppy is handcrafted by veterans in VA hospitals and homes across the country. The Auxiliary distributes these crimson flowers each Memorial Day, reminding every American of the blood shed to preserve our freedom.

All donations received through the Poppy Program are reinvested directly into veteran and military family support programs — a living tribute that keeps the promise of remembrance alive.
